ALMONT — Deception,strategy and fibs in a fly box. Sounding more like mystery theatre thana test of fishing wills, the 2006 Colorado Superfly Contest was all ofthat and more in a setting that could not have more hospitable.
No Agatha Christie here to mislead you down deceptive paths whilethe real answer lies squarely on front of your nose. That really wasn’tneeded, since the participants themselves were rife with artifice andtrickery, and no straight question ever received a similar answer.
“Fly? I can’t tell you, other than it’s a streamer, or maybe a nymphor a dry fly, perhaps,” intoned Tom McDermott of Denver, who winked andgrinned yet nevertheless still refused to divulge the fly patterns heand partner Gary Christlieb were to use in during Saturday’s eighthours of competition.
The trickery is all part of the 2006 Colorado Superfly Contestsponsored by the Gunnison Angling Society, a chapter of TroutUnlimited. This weekend marked the Superfly’s 16th year, at leastthat’s what most people agreed to. There was a year or two during thedrought when the tournament was canceled, but it’s managed to hold onto become one of the state’s oldest and popular fly-fishing fundraisers.........................
