Fundamentals of Fly casting

http://flyfisherman.com/skills/lkcastingbasic/index.html

If you are a newbie to the sport of fly fishing and want to learn how to cast with a fly fishing rod, then here are some fundamental for you. Check it out then practice, practice, practice.

Inspin casting the weight of the lure pulls the line off the reel. In flycasting the weight of the linecarries the fly to the fish. In fly casting you must learn to use therod to cast the weight of the fly line. You can do that quickly byfollowing five basic principles of good fly casting:

  1. The line (and fly) goes in the direction you point the rod tip during the cast.
  2. Good fly casting is not strength-related; it istiming-related. Thus you must practice the timing of the cast to becomea good caster. How much practice? At least 15 minutes a day to become agood caster in a month.
  3. Proper stroking and stopping of the rod are fundamental togood fly casting. The caster loads energy into the rod during thecasting stroke. The rod releases the energy into the line in the cast. The caster loads a little energy (a short, low-energy stroke) into thetop of the rod for short casts; he loads a lot of energy (ashort, powerful stroke) into the middle and bottom of the rod for along cast.
  4. Casting arcs (the arc the rod makes in the air during the cast) are small for short casts and large for long casts.
  5. Stopping the rod after the casting stroke is critical toforming the casting loop, and it allows the rod to unload, thus castingthe line.

Flyfishers seldom need to cast more than 50 feet when fishing. Yetbecoming proficient at long-distance casting can improve all yourcasting. You should learn to cast short (30 feet) first and thenpractice at greater and greater distances.

Fly-tying can be fun!

Fly-tying can be fun, easy (NorthJersey.com)

Here is an article on someone who thinks fly tying can be fun...It is. Sometimes I think it is a time consuming task, but when I finish one I must say it feels quite good and can't wait to test it. Check out the article to see if you agree.

Learning how to tie flies is, at the same time, one of the most rewarding and frustrating things an angler can do.

I'm sure there are folks out there somewhere who just picked up a fly-tying kit one day and started churning out killer fish catchers, but I've never met one. This art -- and that is exactly the right word to describe it -- is mastered by trial and error, and really works best when you have an experienced hand to guide you at the start.

There are some great fly-tying classes available to the general public in North Jersey, especially those being run by the folks at East Jersey Trout Unlimited. Nothing beats the personal touch, and these are well worth the time invested.

But what if you, like me, don't have the desire to go anywhere on those rare evenings home? Or what if you just want to spend some time brushing up on your fly-tying skills, learning a new wrinkle or two?.......................................
