Common mistakes of fly fishers

Even Best Fly Fishers Make Mistakes

In order to be better anglers and improve our fly fishing read the following article. It highlights the common mistakes we all make which are sometimes simple things but occur regularly.....

No one is immune to the need for improvement. This is true of fly anglers no matter how long they have fished.

Hereare some common mistakes anglers make. Correct a few of your worsterrors and you will be on your way to becoming a better angler.

*Reaction is too late. Anglers are often surprised fish are interestedin their offering as soon as it hits the water. They present the flyand then relax — often to the point of becoming distracted.

The line or indicator moves, and, as the fish ejects the fly, they come around to realizing they just missed a fish.

It’shard to stay focused 100 percent of the time, but successful flyanglers anticipate a good presentation receiving a reaction from fish.

*Allowing the belly of the line to swing into a rock or log rather thanin front of it. This is primarily an error judging the distance to theend of the fly.

Try to guesstimate the correct distance to the fly allowing for the lengthof the leader. This is harder for sink tip lines where the dark tipsinks out of sight.

The goal is to allow the fly to come nearthe structure but not close enough to hang-up. Hang-ups waste time andeffort and sometimes cost flies.

If you let the fly swing out onthe far side of a log, as the belly of the line catches the log, itdraws the fly right into it. Tighten the line sooner so the fly swingsjust ahead of the structure drawing out any fish holding in front of orto the near side of the log.

* Leaving the fly in the waterwhile traveling through skip-over water. This is an annoyance to theguide, but also allows the fly to pick up trash or snag objects.Whenever moving to another spot pull the line, leader and fly insidethe boat or coil it in hand as you wade.

* Failing to check flyoften. Moss or other trash on the fly will keep fish away. Anytime yourfly touches bottom, especially when nymphing in fast water with weight,it’s important to check the fly often.
